In 2021, the renowned East Berlin photographer Sven Marquardt told me about an astonishing, but also mysterious dream he had many years ago:

Deep in the night, he was driving along an empty and seemingly endless road, over which huge black poplars rose from both sides like trellises. This dream image must have been extremely impressive because fully-grown black poplar trees can grow up to 30 meters high.

Inspired by this so personal story, I had the idea to translate the powerful dream into cinematic images with the help of DOP Steven Lüdtke. However, I didn’t want the individual scenes to take place on an unknown country road, but in the middle of Berlin. Or more precisely: in East Berlin, Sven Marquardt’s natural habitat—especially at night.
